Opening night Premier of Shave I, II, & III projected on gigantic drive-in-style exterior screen Under the Wire (www.underthewire.biz), the East Pilsen community’s first art boutique at 2210 S. Halsted, proudly welcomes Chicago digital video artist Kim Alpert for the debut of her cutting-edge video art for Chicago South Side audiences. Her show, titled re:edit, will be have a projected outdoor debut at Under the Wire on October 10, 2008 durring the opening reception. Kim will use a 12,000 lumen projector on a gigantic 9’ x 16’ outdoor screen to premier her new works Shave I II & III. The idea for Re:Edit came after someone close to Alpert began a sex-change. Her experiences and reactions prompted Alpert to consider how society, especially the generations, view the concept of gender in dramatically different ways. The intricate and complex, reprocessed and archival images of Re:Edit reflect Alpert’s view that the Internet has hastened the evolution of gender equality, while at the same time it has created a backlash by both men and women who have adopted the harsher attributes of a sexually repressed society. Topics addressed in Re:Edit are aesthetic androgyny in the youth landscape, the role of social networking between different demographics and relationships, the reverse misogyny of the Generation X career woman, and identity shift through over sexualization in the media. Alpert will be exhibiting seven videos viewed on LCD screens, encased in wooden frames that are also designed by the artist. Alpert, a highly acclaimed new media artist, was the film and video curator for the renowned Around the Coyote Art Festival, and has exhibited at Facets Multimedia, Movieside, the 28th Annual Framline Festival, SOFA Chicago 2007, and the first downtown Chicago Looptopia event. She also serves on the advisory Board for Curriculum Design at her alma mater, Full Sail University . |
